최선의 결과인가? 최악의 굴욕 외교인가?

박근혜 대통령은 1월 13일 열린 기자회견에서 한일 ‘위안부’ 합의와 관련해 100% 만족은 못하지만 역대 어떤 정부도 하지 못했던 것을 해냈다며 ‘최선의 결과’라는 입장을 다시 강조했다.

박 대통령은 “위안부 할머니가 한 분이라도 더 생존해 계실 때 사과도 받고 한을 풀어드려야 한다. 그 분들의 명예와 존엄을 회복시켜드려야 한다는 다급하고 절박한 심정으로 노력했다”라고 말했다. 하지만 같은 시각 주한 일본대사관 앞에서 열린 1213번째 수요집회에선 정작 박근혜 대통령을 성토하는 ‘위안부’ 피해 할머니들의 목소리가 울려 퍼졌다. 할머니들은 한일 양국 정부의 이번 합의는 피해자들의 입장을 철저히 무시한 굴욕적 협상이기 때문에 원천 무효라고 밝혔다.

주말인 16일엔 ‘한일 일본군 위안부 합의 무효를 위한 대학생 대책위원회’와 ‘소녀상 지키는 시민행동’ 소속 회원과 시민들이 서울 광화문 과장에서 한일 양국 정부 규탄 국민대회를 열고 일본대사관 앞 소녀상까지 행진을 벌였다. 이처럼 지난해 연말 갑작스레 전해진 한일 ‘위안부’ 합의의 후폭풍은 병신년 새해에도 여전히 가라앉지 않고 있다.

한국탐사저널리즘센터/뉴스타파는 토크쇼 형식의 파일럿 프로그램 <토크타파>를 통해 이번 한일 ‘위안부’ 협상 과정의 정당성, 합의 내용의 국제법상 효력, 65년 한일협정부터 이번 위안부 합의까지 한일 간 과거사 논의의 성격, 이번 합의와 그 배후의 힘으로 지목된 미국의 이해 관계 등을 주류 방송의 토크쇼에서는 볼 수 없는 차별화된 시각과 맥락으로 흥미롭게 분석한다.

예정된 시간보다 빨리 도착한 덕분에 광화문 광장에 들러 사진으로만 보던 세종대왕 동상과 이순신장군의 동상을볼 수 있었다. 생각했던 것보다 웅장하고 기품있는 모습에 오늘 할 체험이 기대되었고, 광장 여기저기에 걸려있는 태극기들에 광복 70주년의 감동이 밀려 왔다.

이순신 장군 동상 앞에 세월호 합동 분양소가 있어 우리 일행은 국화꽃으로 추모하였다.
일 년도 더 지난 일이지만, 교복을 입은 모습들을 보니 마음이 아팠다.

매주 수요일이면 블라인드를 내린다는 일본 대사관은 오늘도 어김없이 굳게 닫혀 있었다.

그리고 그 앞 평화로에는 폭염 속에서도 학생을 포함한 수많은 사람들이 대사관을 향해 있는 힘껏 외치고 있었다. “할머니, 힘내세요!” “일본은 진심으로 사과하라!”고.



우리 뿐 만 아니라 방학을 맞아 많은 학생들이 미리 와서 정성스레 만든 플랜카드를 들고 있는 모습을 보니 그동안 나는 상대적으로 무관심했던 것 같아 할머니들께 죄송한 마음이 들었다. 겨울 방학에는 반 친구들과 함께 수요집회에 동참해보고 싶다.

버스로 서대문 형무소로 이동하던 중 창밖에 독립문이 보여 신기한 마음에 “독립문이다!” 하고 외쳤는데, 식사 후 생각지도 않게 그곳에 들르게 되었다.
많은 사람들은 독립문이 일제로부터의 독립을 상징한다고 생각하는데, 파리의 개선문을 본 따 독립협회가 국민 모금으로 지은 청으로부터의 독립을 상징하는 문이라고 한다.

그 때문에 독립문 옆에 독립협회의 큰 축이신 서재필선생님의 동상이 있는 것이었다.

다음으로 우리가 향한 곳은 서대문 형무소였다. 서대문 형무소는 1908년에 건립되어 1987년까지 실제 감옥으로 사용되었다. 이 곳에서 수많은 독립운동가 분들이 모진 고문을 받다 돌아가셨을 생각을 하니 가슴이 아팠다.
민족 저항실에서 그 사진들을 볼 수 있었는데, 한 분 한 분 당당하고 결의에 찬 모습이었다.
내가 그 분들의 후손인 것이 무척 자랑스럽게 느껴졌다.



전시관을 나와 판옵티콘 구조의 11옥사에 들어섰다. 내 방만큼 좁은 공간에서 적게는 7명, 많게는 30명이 수감생활을 함께 했다고 한다. 비인간적인 일제의 탄압에 화가 치밀었다.

가장 충격적이었던 곳은 사형장이었다. 이 곳에서 수많은 독립운동가와 민주화 운동가 분들이 형장의 이슬로 사라졌다. 마지막 순간까지 신념을 꺾지 않으신 그 분들의 숭고한 죽음 앞에 눈물이 난다. 다함께 추모비에서 추모를 하며 아픈 역사를 잊지 말아야겠다고 다짐했다.
   
마지막으로 현재는 경찰청 인권센터인 남영동 대공분실을 찾았다. 고문실인 5층은 긴창문으로 되어 있고, 나선형 계단과 층수를 알 수 없도록 만든 구조가 잔인하다는 생각이 들었다. 비록 이 시대를 살지 않았지만, 충분히 공감할 수 있을 만큼 무섭고 아픈  역사의 현장이었다.
   
날은 덥고, 모처럼 맞이한 방학에 이렇게 뜻 깊은 곳들을 방문하고 참여하게 되어 뿌듯한 마음과 더불어 감사한 마음이 들었다. 더 많은 사람들이 우리 역사를 바로 알고 관심을 가져주었으면 좋겠다.
