국제앰네스티, 백남기 농민을 기억하는 다이 인(Die-in) 플래시몹 벌여

‘우리가 백남기다’

14일 오후 6시 56분 종로 서린교차로 횡단보도에 초록색 보행신호가 켜지자, 흰색 우비를 입은 80여명의 시민들이 거리 위에 쓰러지는 장면을 연출했다. 경찰이 과도하게 물대포를 사용했던 지난해 11월 14일 민중총궐기 집회 현장을 연상시키려는 듯 참가자들은 흰색 우비를 입었고, 그들이 쓰러진 자리에는 범죄현장을 나타내는 현장보존선이 설치됐다.

국제앰네스티 한국지부는 백남기 농민이 경찰의 물대포에 쓰러진 지 1년이 되는 11월 14일 오후 6시 56분 ’백남기 농민을 기억하는 다이 인(Die-in) 플래시몹’ 퍼포먼스를 진행했다. ‘다이 인 플래시몹’은 비폭력 저항방식의 하나로 익명의 사람들이 한 장소에 모여 죽은 듯이 드러누워 항의하는 표현방식이다.

김희진 국제앰네스티 한국지부 사무처장은 “백남기 농민이 돌아가신 후 사망의 원인을 왜곡하려는 시도가 여러 차례 있었지만, 경찰이 쏜 물대포로 인해 백남기 농민이 사망에 이르렀다는 사실은 가릴 수 없는 진실이다. 이 곳은 경찰이 저지른 범죄의 현장이다. 경찰이 불법적으로 물리력을 행사했을 때 법률상 형사범죄로 처벌되도록 보장해야 한다는 점을 국제인권기준에서는 분명하게 명시하고 있다”고 말했다.

이어 김 사무처장은 “즉각 독립적이고 불편부당한 조사가 있어야 한다. 이번 사건의 책임자가 법의 심판을 받는 그날까지 행동하겠다는 마음을 모아 이 자리를 마련했다”고 이번 퍼포먼스의 취지를 밝혔다.

‘우리가 백남기다’는 이름으로 진행된 이번 퍼포먼스에 참가한 박종옥 국제앰네스티 한국지부 회원은 “물대포를 직사로 시민에게 겨눈 경찰 책임자가 반드시 처벌받아야 이런 사건이 반복되지 않을 것”이라고 말했다. 또한, 일반인 참가자 이상은 “백남기 농민의 물대포로 인해 돌아가신 것이 부당하다고 생각하고, 행동한 사람들이 있다는 것을 알리고 싶어 참여했다”고 말했다.

캐나다에서 온 여성 참가자도 눈에 띄었다. 캐서린 크리스티(Catherine Christie)는 “백남기 농민이 부상을 입고 사망한 것도 충격적이었지만, 물대포를 쏜 경찰관도, 명령을 한 지휘관도 아무도 처벌받지 않았다는 사실이 더 충격적이고 믿을 수 없었다”고 말했다. 끝.

Amnesty International Die-In Flash Mob Held in Memory of Farmer Baek Nam-gi

 “We are All Baek Nam-gi”

At 6:56 pm on the drizzly evening of Monday, 14 November, some 80 people stepped out in unison onto the pedestrian crossing at the Jongno District Office intersection in white raincoats and acted out the scene of falling to the ground. The white raincoats were reminiscent of those worn by participants at the People’s Rally of 14 November 2015 who were struck by police water cannon. Other participants erected police lines around the crime scene.

Amnesty International Korea gathered people at 6:56 pm on Monday, 14 November, one year on at the exact time and location at which farmer Baek Nam-gi was struck down by police water cannon to perform a ‘die-in’ flash mob performance in his memory. A ‘die-in’ flash mob is a form of nonviolent action in which many people gather together in one location and symbolically act out dying together.

“After farmer Baek Nam-gi passed away, there were many attempts to distort the cause of death, but the fact is that farmer Baek Nam-gi was killed due to being struck by police water cannon cannot be hidden. This is the scene where a crime was committed by the police. Any law enforcement officer responsible for the use excessive use of force must face criminal punishment as is clearly stipulated in international human rights standards,” said Catherine Heejin Kim, Amnesty International Korea director.

She explained that this performance expressed the message that, “There must be an immediate independent and impartial investigation. Any law enforcement officer found responsible for the excessive use of force in this incident must be brought to justice immediately.”

Joining the performance under the slogan of ‘We are All Baek Nam-gi’, Amnesty International Korea member, Park Jong-ok explained that, “The police officer responsible for firing the water cannon directly at a person must be punished in order for this kind of incident not to be repeated.” Another participant named I-sang added that, “It is unjust that farmer Baek Nam-gi was killed by water cannon and participants want to express this by joining.”

A participant from Canada named Catherine Christie also stood out in the crowd. She explained her reason for joining: “The death-sustaining injury to farmer Baek Nam-gi was a very shocking occurrence, and that no one has been punished, neither the policeman who fired the water cannon at the crowd, nor the official who ordered such a step, nor the government who approved such action, is unbelievable.”
