우리는 수중에서 더듬더듬해서, 머리에서 그려진다 말입니다. 머리에서 그려지는게 … 자꾸 제 머리속에서 생각나고 … 하루에 한 번 들어가야될 현장을 많게는 4~5번도 들어가는 분들도 있어요. 다른 잠수사들이 그런 얘기를 해요, 저한테. “왜 그렇게 일 했나고?” 아니 사람이 없는데 그럼 뭐 어떻게 할꺼야? … 진짜 중요한 거는 살릴 수 있던 아이들을 살릴 수 있었으면, 우리같은 사람들이 있었을 필요 없었겠지. 제대로 구할 수만 있었었다면… 그런데 그 누구도 구하지 않고, 상황보고, 보고, 보고…
김관홍 시민잠수사 인터뷰 中
“We had to grope around and imagine in the dark water. Those images in my mind are… They are stuck in my mind. I’m supposed to dive only once per day but had to dive 4, even 5 times per day. Other divers told me that I shouldn’t have worked that hard. But what could I do when there were not enough divers? The important point was that we would not have been needed if they had saved the kids they could have saved. Only if they have saved them… But they didn’t. They just kept reporting on the situation,” recalled KIM GWAN-HONG Civilian diver.
내 남편 김관홍 잠수사를 잊지 않고 기억해 주시는 모든 분들께 정말 감사합니다. 그토록 기다리던 세월호가 3년만에 깊은 바다속에서 올라왔어요. 처참한 모습으로 떠오른 그 배를 보러 목표 신항에 갔습니다. 가까이 다가가 세월호를 봤는데, 당신을 생각해 온 마음과 몸이 무너지고 아팠습니다. 거짓은 내려가고, 진실은 올라왔는데, 더 좋은 세상이 왔는데, 오고 있는데, 당신과 함께할 수 없다는 사실이 너무도 안타깝고 아쉽습니다. 이제 그곳에서 아프지 말고 편히 쉬라고 말하고 싶어요. 남편이 남긴 마지막 말 제가 다시 한 번 반복하고 싶습니다.

故 김관홍님의 아내 김혜연님의 추모사 中
“I am very much grateful to all of you who are here to commemorate my late husband. My love, the Sewol had finally emerged from the deep sea. I went to Mokop New Port to see the wrecked Sewol. The Sewol reminded me of you, and I felt sick in my heart and body. The untruth has sunk, and the truth has been salvaged. A “better” time has come, or is coming, but I am so sorry that you are not with me anymore. Please rest in peace and good health there. I would like to repeat my husband’s last words: Please take good care of future affairs,” condoled KIM HYE-YEON Wife of late KIM GWAN-HONG.

After five months of protests demanding the impeachment of President Park Geun-Hye, an investigation found her guilty of grand corruption, blacklisting, and misuse of power. Two weeks after President Park was removed from office, the salvage of the Sewol began. It was three years after the sinking.

약 4년전인 지난 2016년 6월 17일, 故 김관홍 시민잠수사님께서는 세월호 침몰 후 2년만에 사고 트라우마로 스스로 생을 마감하셨습니다.
About four years ago, on 17 June 2016, our hero, the late KIM GWAN-HONG, did away with himself two years after the Sewol ferry incident, as suffering from trauma.
모든 희생자들과 삼가고인의 명복을 빕니다.
May all the victims and souls rest in peace.
