#End the Korean War

The Korean War is in a ceasefire state. In other words, it is not completely over. South Koreans can travel to almost anywhere in the world today, whether actually or virtually, but North Korea remains steadily closed off and inaccessible behind the barbed wires which break the Korean Peninsula in half across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

The fear of war, hostility, and military tension have shaped the lives of people living on the Korean Peninsula for seven decades. 70 years is enough. It's time to end the Korean War.

We imagine a future where the people of the Korean Peninsula, East Asia and the world cooperate and coexist peacefully. We hope our resources will be used for people’s safety and happiness, for environmental sustainability and a society without discrimination instead of preparing for war. We hope that the Korean Peninsula, which was a symbol of confrontation and conflict, will be changed into a birthplace of peace and coexistence together with peace-loving people around the world.

Korea Peace Appeal is 

an international campaign that seeks to amplify voices calling for an end to the Korean War and a transition from armistice to peace beyond the Korean Peninsula and throughout the world. The campaign aims to end the Korean War and achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula by collecting 100 million signatures of the Korea Peace Appeal from 2020, the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, to 2023, the 70th anniversary of the armistice agreement.

More than 370 South Korean civil society organizations, individual supporters, all the seven major religious orders in Korea, and over 60 international partner organizations are participating in the Korea Peace Appeal Campaign as of June 2021.

Korea Peace Appeal is now available in Arabic, Chinese, Deutsch, English, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish. It will be translated into more diverse languages.

평화체제와 군사동맹은 공존 가능한가

지난해부터 이어진 한반도 평화 프로세스로 한반도 정세는 크게 변화하고 있습니다. 한반도 평화체제 구축 과정에서 정전체제를 기반으로 시작된 한미동맹은 변화를 요구받을 수 밖에 없습니다.

동아시아 지역에서 중국의 영향력 강화에 맞서, 미국은 인도·태평양 전략을 추진하고 있습니다. 지난 여름 한미정상회담 이후 미 국무부는 한미동맹을 ‘인도·태평양 지역 평화와 안보의 린치핀’으로 규정했습니다. 한편, 문재인 대통령은 동북아 전체의 안정과 평화를 위해 주한미군이 평화협정 체결 이후에도 계속 주둔할 필요가 있다고 밝혀왔습니다. 작년 제50차 SCM에서 한미 국방부 장관은 '미래 한미동맹 국방비전'을 공동으로 연구하기로 합의했고, 현재 연구를 진행 중입니다. 한반도 정세에 지대한 영향을 미쳐 온 한미동맹의 변화를 준비해야 하지만, 동아시아 평화의 관점에서 군사동맹을 바라보는 시각은 여전히 부족합니다. 

이번 포럼을 통해 동아시아 정세와 미국의 전략을 분석하고, 첨예한 현안들을 짚어보며 한미동맹의 현주소를 검토하고자 합니다. 이를 바탕으로 군사동맹이 아닌 새로운 길을 모색할 예정입니다. 한미동맹의 변화를 고민하는 당신을 초대합니다.
