A 24-foot minke whale was found dead in a bycatch 26 miles off the coast of Ulsan on Aug 19. The captain reported it to the Coast Guard which inspected the dead whale by using a metal detector to see if a deliberate killing method was used. The Ulsan Coast Guard found no evidence and so issued a permit to the captain who sold it at $65,000 USD at Bangeojin fish market in Ulsan. It weighed 3 tons. 70% of whale meat served in South Korean restaurants are from illegal whaling. We think many bycatch cases are actually deliberate killing of the whales to earn money.
